The Narcissist
The Narcissist is a powerful psychological drama that explores the hidden realities of narcissistic abuse and toxic relationships. Written and directed by Birmingham-based sociologist, writer, and theatre-maker Dr. Carlette L. Norwood, the play shines a light on the emotional and psychological impact of manipulation, control, and isolation within intimate relationships.
The story follows Dena, a woman who believes she has finally found the perfect partner in Marcus, charming, attentive, and seemingly devoted. But as the relationship deepens, Marcus’s affection slowly reveals a darker side. Through subtle gaslighting, emotional manipulation, and increasing control, Dena begins to lose her sense of self, leaving her struggling to distinguish love from possession and loyalty from submission.Inspired by real-life experiences, The Narcissist offers a raw and intimate portrayal of a form of abuse that often remains invisible to the outside world.
The play premiered at The Birmingham Black Box Theatre during Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, where it resonated deeply with audiences and sparked important conversations around narcissistic abuse, mental health, and the power of community support. Following the performances, audience members participated in panel discussions featuring mental health professionals and survivors, further extending the play’s mission of awareness and healing.
Due to the powerful response from audiences and growing demand, The Narcissist will return to the stage in Spring 2026, continuing its work of raising awareness and encouraging dialogue around toxic relationships and emotional wellbeing.More than a theatrical production, The Narcissist is a call to recognize the warning signs of psychological abuse, support those affected, and remind survivors that they are not alone.
